Nha San Collective - SWFP3 - Knowledge Exchange - Queer Narrative and Queer Criticism Possibilities and Challenges

A brief introduction of queer theory (ies) and examples of queer narratives in literature and cinema will be discussed in the seminar to ignite thoughts on the following questions: What is the meaning of queer reading/queer criticism in the context of Vietnam? Is this an act of identifying codes of sexuality underlying a text and revealing the psychology of homophobia disguised in various expressions? Should we conceive of it as an alliance with the social movements struggling for the rights of LGBT, which has developed with high enthusiasm recently or it is rather an attempt to establish the aesthetics of queer art in their own right?

Trần Ngọc Hiếu in dialogue with Trương Minh Quý
Time and Date: 16:30, Wednesday September 21st 2016
Address: Nhà Sàn Collective, số 1 Lương Yên, Hà Nội
The seminar will be held only in Vietnamese. Please register for English interpretation at the entrance if needed!

The Man with the Red Nails

The Man with the Red Nails describes the partially dreamt, partially real experience of exile of a man with no memory, played by Trương Minh Quý himself. His journey begins when he wakes up by the Loire riverbank in France and realises he no longer remembers anything. The character is adrift in a strange city, searching for a way to survive and find his identify. The film becomes a hypothetical space in which all borders in the construction of character and narrative, along with concepts of gender, nationality, geographical distances, culture and language, are blurred.

Trần Ngọc Hiếu born in 1979 in Hà Nội, Hiếu has been working as a lecturer at the Hà Nội National University of Education since 2001 and earned his PhD Degree in Literary Theory in 2012. His research interests include literary theories, contemporary art and Vietnamese modern literature. He both writes and translates academic texts and his work has been published in the Literary Studies Journal (Nghiên cứu văn học), the Journal of Foreign Literature (Văn học nước ngoài) and the Culture and Arts Journal (Tạp chí Văn hóa nghệ thuật).

Trương Minh Quý born in 1990 in Buôn Mê Thuột and now based in Hồ Chí Minh City, Trương Minh Quý attended a directing course at Hồ Chí Minh City University of Cinema and Theatre in 2008; but halted his studies a year later to pursue independent filmmaking. He participated in the AFA program (Busan International Film Festival, 2012), and the Berlinale Talentsprogram (Berlin International Film Festival, 2016). His previous works have been screened at renowned international film festivals and exhibitions in Oberhausen (Germany), Clermont-Ferrand (France), Les Rencontres Internationales Paris (France) etc.

Minh Quý explores his ideas primarily through video and experimental filmmaking. The images and narratives in his works often stand on the border between the real and the surreal, the personal and the non-personal and address his concern with the human existence in the contexts of urban and non-urban, civilization and primitivism.
