Nha San Collective - SWFP3 - Knowledge Exchange - Queer Narrative and Queer Criticism Possibilities and Challenges

About

A brief introduction of queer theory (ies) and examples of queer narratives in literature and cinema will be discussed in the seminar to ignite thoughts on the following questions: What is the meaning of queer reading/queer criticism in the context of Vietnam? Is this an act of identifying codes of sexuality underlying a text and revealing the psychology of homophobia disguised in various expressions? Should we conceive of it as an alliance with the social movements struggling for the rights of LGBT, which has developed with high enthusiasm recently or it is rather an attempt to establish the aesthetics of queer art in their own right?

The Man with the Red Nails

The Man with the Red Nails describes the partially dreamt, partially real experience of exile of a man with no memory, played by Trương Minh Quý himself. His journey begins when he wakes up by the Loire riverbank in France and realises he no longer remembers anything. The character is adrift in a strange city, searching for a way to survive and find his identify. The film becomes a hypothetical space in which all borders in the construction of character and narrative, along with concepts of gender, nationality, geographical distances, culture and language, are blurred.
