This Wong Kar-Wai's film features two Hongkong movie stars Leslie Cheung and Tony Leung who play a lover couple who travel to the far away Argentina to "start over" their relationship; and Taiwanese pop idol Chang Chen in a role of a young man with good hearing, the person that Tony Leung, the film's narrator wants to meet again.

I'm not sure if the "gay" word is used in this film, at least not in English subtitles. Director Wong Kar-Wai states many time in interviews that Happy Together is not a "gay film" but "just a story of how two very different men love each other and can't tolerate each other". He also says that his films are not stories, more about characters.
