Nha San Collective - Artist talk with Nguyen Huy An

About

Nhasan Collective would like to invite you to an art talk with artist Nguyen Huy An on the occasion of his works being exhibited in the 14th Istanbul Biennale, taking place in Turkey. In this talk, he will introduce his art practice journey, starting from the very first installation done a decade ago to the current stage.

In his practice, Huy An tends towards a minimal way of expression, using dark materials from everyday life associated with memories and personal experiences. They reflect the contemplation of the artist on the position or relation of human power with the outside world, examine and deconstruct the sizes of significant images or concepts with a patient, delicate and meticulous approach. Hanoi streets are 36 rolls of black thread, the tallest building in Vietnam is a stack of paper, concrete bridge is a dusty table, monuments are forms of shadows.

In this conversation, Huy An also intends to share these observations and personal questions about art in the continual change of time, between the creative scenes in different dimensions.

Nguyen Huy An (1982) is living and working in Hanoi. He's been participating and practicing in the art community of Nhasan, with artists of the same generation such as Nam Tran, Vu Duc Toan Phuong Linh, etc. Huy An's works have been exhibited at many notable events as Salt Water, Istanbul Biennale 14 in Turkey (2015); Miền Méo Miệng/ Contemporary Art from Vietnam, Bildmusset, Sweden (2015); Disrupted Choreographies, Carré d’art, Musée d’art contemporain de Nimes, France (2014); 78 rhythms, solo exhibition at Gallery Quỳnh, Vietnam (2014), If the world change, Singapore Biennale (2013), Lim Dim, Sterneson Museum, Oslo, Sweden (2009), Tầm tã, Sàn Art, tp Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam (2009).
